Whenever I’m walking down the halls or sitting in class I always see people with earbuds or headphones shuffling past, but I never took the time to wonder- what are they listening to? In this article, I decided to do just that and surveyed a completely random sample of students throughout various classes and lunch periods to ask them what their favorite artist is. The results are certainly something!
From this sample we have Kanye, Drake, and Zach Bryan in the top 3. While this sample is limited and doesn’t necessarily represent the entire high school, we do still see popular musicians like Kanye West, Drake, and Zach Bryan coming out on the top of the heap! Despite its restricted nature, this sample lets us take a look into something we’re usually oblivious to: what’s really playing in our fellow classmates’ ears. Interviewing students gave me an insight into the diversity and variation in people’s music tastes and preferences.
While we can see primarily modern artists prevailing on this chart, there is a substantial turnout for older bands and musicians. This is indicative of the multigenerational impact many of these artists have had on music and people. Still, this long list of artists tells us that when we see students shuffling past with their headphones on, each and every one of them is pairing their already unique experiences with their own lens of music. Oftentimes though we see our peers daily, we are blind to what they are truly feeling or thinking about. So while this dataset doesn’t reveal any secrets, it is a perfect example of everyone’s uniqueness.
