Maya Wins First Place

As the sun leaks through the windows of the room, Maya Pizzarello who holds two school records in the 200 and 500 meter freestyle, hesitantly wakes up for a long day ahead of her.

On days where Pizzarello has swim meets, it is imperative that she eats a pretzel bagel, untoasted with cream cheese for breakfast. This superstition is something that Pizzarello needs to do the morning of every single swim meet.  On the drive to New Paltz High School the junior will occasionally stop for coffee, Pizzarello says, “It depends on if I’m feeling exhausted”. The school record holder then heads to school for a day of productive learning. After the first half of school work, Pizzarello usually likes to eat the chicken sandwich, chicken bacon ranch wrap or chicken caesar wrap from the cafeteria. Once the day completes, Pizzarello takes a nap until it’s time to work hard at her swim practice. On some days of the week, the strong swimmer stays after the varsity practice even longer for club practice. Thereafter, Pizzarello showers and then does some homework, before going to sleep to repeat the tiring, but worth it cycle….
